I am considering buying a boat. Of course I have a ton of questions about the whole process. I specifically have a lot of questions about boat insurance.

Some of the things I want to know about boat insurance include:

• Is boat insurance mandatory for all boat owners or is it something that is optional?
• Do I have a lot of choices with boat insurance? For example, is it like auto insurance where you choose liability or full coverage?
• Is there a way to get a discount on boat insurance if I’m not using the boat? It seems a lot less likely that it would get damaged during the winter months when it’s just sitting there as compared to in the summer when it’s being used, right?
• Does the boat insurance cover damage to specific parts, such as Evinrude parts? If not, is it possible to get additional parts insurance for the parts that are quite costly?
• How easy is it to work with boat insurance companies if there ever is an accident and I need to make an insurance claim?
• And of course I want to know how much boat insurance is going to cost me. Will I still be able to afford my monthly payments on the boat when I add the insurance that I need?!
