I’m A Renter

I know that by paying rent I am making my landlord’s mortgage payment, building him equity, and making him rich. I understand that paying rent does not make sense. It really doesn’t take the IQ of a genius to figure out that I would be better off if I were to own my own home and pay my own mortgage instead of paying someone else’s. That part I understand.

But that’s were the Catch 22 comes into play. Have you seen the crazy high prices they command for north San Diego real estate these days? It sounds crazy, but in my position I can not afford to make the smartest investment someone can make which is buying their own home. I have been priced out of the market as they say.

Because of the location of my office space, San Diego commute times would kill me if I moved far enough away that homes became more affordable. So townhomes in Carlsbad suddenly are not an option unless I consider changing jobs also. And I don’t think that changing jobs right now is the answer because nobody is hiring. In fact, I should be thankful that my company isn’t firing people like so many other companies are doing right now. So for now, I shall continue renting.
