Working with Your Health Insurance Company

As almost anyone who has (or has had) a medical condition knows, working with your health insurance company can sometimes be quite a challenge.  Some things they’ll cover without question, but they can tend to be suspicious of other health costs, especially those generated by fairly new procedures or treatments.

For instance, as a type 1 diabetic I have absolutely no problem getting my insurance company to cover insulin, as the need for this is pretty obvious.  However, I’ve been trying to get them to cover a continuous glucose monitor for me.  Since the CGM is still fairly new techology, many insurance companies are unlikely to cover them until there is a documented advantage for diabetics to use them.

Using magnets for health is another area where insurance companies may be skeptical.  Although studies have proven magnets to be effective alternative pain relief, my guess is you won’t have much luck talking your insurance company into buying you one of these devices.  However, the benefits of natural pain relief — i.e. not putting lots of drugs into your body — are also very pronounced, so if you do your research and are persistent with your insurance company, you just might have some luck!
