BIPAP Versus CPAP

BIPAP stands for Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure, which is different from CPAP, which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. There are several differences between BIPAP and CPAP supplies. Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure equipment is based upon the fundamental design of CPAP devices, but instead of having air simply continuously being forced into a person’s airwaves there is a second setting on BIPAP devices which allows for exhaling as well as inhaling.
While a sleep apnea machine is useful for individuals who experience a cessation of breath while sleeping, BIPAP devices are especially useful for individuals who experience congestive heart failure, lung disorders and for those who cannot be benefited by intubations. Repertory tests and a forced vital capacity test may be performed by your doctor or physician in order to determine whether or not you may benefit from a BIPAP device.
It may be possible for you to determine which device you think may be more beneficial for your particular situation. However, it is always best to get advice and recommendations from your doctor prior to purchasing CPAP equipment or BIPAP supplies. While most insurance companies will cover such equipment, they may require a referral from your physician prior to covering the cost. If you do not go through your insurance company, you may be required to fund the purchase of such medical items on your own.
