Ask Average Joe About Health Insurance

Health insurance is so confusing isn’t it? First you need to figure out what type of insurance coverage to get. Then you have to deal with copays, submitting claims, filing appeals on claims that get denied, etc. Even trying to read a health insurance statement is confusing with all of its “allowed amounts” and “billed amounts” and “owed amounts”. So who do you turn to when you need help with health insurance questions? I’m starting to realize that the average Joe in any given field of health is the person to ask when it comes to most health insurance questions.
Let’s say that I need to buy a CPAP mask but my health insurance company is telling me that the mask that I bought isn’t covered under my health insurance plan. I could spend days on the phone with the company getting the runaround about the issue. Or I could go to the nearest CPAP supply store and ask the clerks behind the counter what their experience has been with this. Chances are that either they or their customers have dealt with this issue before and someone’s figured out how to handle it with the health insurance company. Doctors and health insurance professionals can be useful in answering some questions but usually I just ask the Average Joe.
